What you do for the distributive property. First you multiply a number for example 2 x 12 next you break apart the biggest number and put the smallest number next to it in then multiply them two. next you put the answer under it. And then add the two answers up and you get the answer. For the associative property you multiply three numbers for example 12 x 4 x 4 next you can put parenthesis around any two numbers you want next you multiply the numbers you put the parenthesis around and put the answer under it and bring down the x 4 and you multiply them up and you get the answer.

I would tell him that the distributive prop.is like this and write it on a piece of paper.

To do distributive you will first need a problem like 7x6. Then, I will break apart the 6 and put 7x5 and 7x1 the answer to #1 is 35 and number 2 is 7 so what's 35 +1 ? It is 42 . However the associative is you take a problem like 5x8x7 and put () around the 5x8 and get40 then I would multiply 7 and 40 and get 280.

I would tell them the distributive property is any number times the number and use parentheses to make smaller problems. For example is 7x8 you make (7x4) + (7x4) . That is 28 + 28. That would be 56.

The first thing I would do is explain to him distributive property by using an example 4x15 = ? (4x10) + (4x5)

If I was teaching someone what distributive properties and associative properties I would start by showing them the problem. In associative no matter what order the numbers are put you still get the same answer, for example (2 x 4) x 3 and 2 x (4 x 3) = 24. Then I would explain distributive properties by showing them this example, 3 x (2 + 4) = 3 x 2 + 3 x 4 = 18

First I would explain to them what the associative and the distributive property is and then write it on a piece of paper. Let's start with an easy multiplication sentence.

The first thing I would do is learn how to speak their language then I'll write down a problem and explain how to do it. For example 2x4 and I will say when you look at the 2 you are doubling the number you multiplying. And the same thing I will do with the Associative property but instead I will tell them that you put parenthesis you do first and you put the other number down. 2x3x4.

I would tell them the associative property is when you are multiplying three numbers. You put parenthesis around two numbers. For example, 2x2x2 you would put parenthesis around two of the numbers like this (2x2)x2 solve what is in parenthesis first. For distributive I would tell them the distributive property is when you break apart the number. For example, 10x10 you would break it apart by doing this (10x5) (10x5) solve both and add together.
